The Samajwadi Party (SP), the BSP and the Rashtriya Lok Dal (RLD) on Tuesday demanded the use of ballot papers in the forthcoming Lok Sabha elections saying that EVMs are ''prone to being tampered''.

''A doubt has been raised on the EVMs... We need to understand as to why developed countries like Japan use ballot papers in there polls,'' SP president Akhilesh Yadav said.

He said that the Election Commission (EC) should use ballot papers in the upcoming Lok Sabha polls to ''keep the people's faith in democracy intact''.

BSP supremo Mayawati also made a similar demand.

''The EC must take cognisance of the hacking report... Until the doubts are cleared, ballot papers should be used in elections,'' she said.

RLD leader Jayant Chaudhary said that democracy would be in grave danger if EVMs were used in the polling again.
