The Tamil Nadu government on Monday announced that 67 life convicts, who have spent more than 10 years in jail, will be released from prisons as part of the commemoration of the late chief minister M G Ramachandran's birth centenary.
An official release from the government said 67 convicts will be released in the first phase in line with the announcement by Chief Minister Edappadi K Palaniswami during the centenary celebrations in Dindigul in December.
Law Minister C Ve Shanguman said Governor Banwarilal Purohit has to give sanction for the proposed release of prisoners after a case by case review of convicts, including their criminal background, in keeping with the Supreme Court guidelines.
The government plans to release more than 1,000 prisoners but the process has slowed down after Purohit ordered a review.
