The Winter Session of Parliament is expected to begin in the last week of November with both the Lok Sabha and the Rajya Sabha holding simultaneous sittings observing Covid-19 protocol.

The Session is likely to have 20 sittings between November 29 and December 23 with the opposition seeking to corner the Modi government on issues such as the Lakhimpur Kheri killings, price rise, privatisation of Air India and the tensions with China.

As many as eight bills are pending in the Rajya Sabha and six in the Lok Sabha that include the Assisted Reproductive Technology (Regulation) Bill, The Personal Data Protection Bill, the DNA Technology (Use and Application) Regulation Bill among others.

Last year, the Winter Session of parliament could not be held due to the Covid-19 pandemic and the subsequent sessions – Budget and Monsoon – had to be cut short due to the second wave of the pandemic.

Though both Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha will sit simultaneously, the members will follow social distancing norms.

In the first few sessions, both the Lok Sabha and the Rajya Sabha had separate sittings as chambers of both the Houses were used for seating members keeping social distancing norms in mind and ensuring that not many people were present inside the Parliament complex.

The Winter session is set to be acrimonious as it will be held just months before the assembly elections in Uttar Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Punjab, Goa and Manipur.
