JOIN USIn a record of sorts, the Chhatrapati Shivaji International Airport (CSIA) in Mumbai – one of the busiest in the world - crossed the mark of 1,000 flights a day.
It is the highest traffic in a single day at any airport in India till date, according to GVK Mumbai International Airport Limited (MIAL), the company that manages the airport.
“On Tuesday, June 5, 2018, the Mumbai airport handled 1,003 takeoffs and landings, breaking its own record of handling 988 flight movements in a day. It is the highest traffic in a single day at any airport in India till date,” a Mumbai airport spokesperson said.
A quintessence of operational excellence, the Mumbai airport is in the league of the busiest single- runway airports around the world, handling over 1,000 flights a day.
“Due to heavy rainfall the aircraft were diverted to nearby airports and were later accommodated as the rain stopped, which lead to increase in the flight movements,” the spokesperson pointed out.
The CSIA has two intersecting runways and hence it can operate only one at a time. There are two crossing runways - 09/27 (the main) and 14/32 (the secondary runway). The main can handle 48 arrivals and departures an hour, while the secondary runway can handle 35 flights an hour.
