National-level cyclists made to sleep on floor in Raj

Last Updated 30 January 2019, 16:09 IST

In an incidence of sheer apathy, cyclists from various parts of India were made to sleep on the floor under cold conditions in Rajasthan, even as the temperature dipped well below 10 degree Celsius.

Moreover, the place lacked hot water and storage facilities for their bikes. The cyclists have come to participate in the National Cycling Championship, which kicked off on Wednesday.

The entire Rajasthan men's team comprising 30 players have been put up in a hall measuring about 30 x 20 feet. The cyclists slept on mattresses spread on the floor. Many participants shared photos of their accommodation on social media and highlighted the apathy towards them by the administration.

When asked why cyclists were made to sleep near the velodrome, the Cycling Association President S Periwal told DH, "Cyclists could have been provided accommodation in hotels but their cycles cost between Rs 5 to 8 lakh. And hotels don't allow cycles and cyclists don't want to leave their cycles anywhere."

Earlier also, players were asked by the state authorities to vacate the velodrome at the stadium for Republic Day preparations.

It is the first time that three cycling championships are being held in Jaipur.

The 71st senior, 48th junior and 34th sub-junior National Track Cycling Championships kicked started at the SMS stadium velodrome on Wednesday and will be held till February 3.

More than 600 players from 25 states are expected to take part in the championships.
