BJP greatest danger for India, like 440 volts: Mamata

Last Updated 27 April 2019, 15:09 IST

West Bengal Chief Minister and Trinamool Congress supremo Mamata Banerjee on Saturday came down heavily on BJP calling it "the greatest danger for the country like 440 volts" and asked people to prevent it from returning to power.

People should reject BJP and should refrain from casting any vote in favour of the party, she said at poll meetings in Hooghly and Howrah districts during the day.

"I assure that if Trinamool Congress is voted to power, then there will be no damage to the country," she told a poll rally at Pandua in Hoogly district held in support of Hooghly Lok Sabha Trinamool Congress candidate Ratna De Nag.

"Both BJP and Narendra Modi will destroy the country if voted to power for the second time .... BJP is the greatest danger for the country, like 440 volt," she said adding that the ongoing election is to remove the BJP government.

Campaigning for her party candidates at Joypur and Panchla in Howrah districts, Banerjee claimed that the Modi government had in the last five years failed completely to deliver for the people's welfare and the country's future.

She was canvassing for Prasun Banerjee, a former international footballer and an Arjuna awardee who is seeking to be returned from Howrah Lok Sabha seat and Sajda Ahmed, widow of former TMC MP Sultan Ahmed, who is in the fray from Uluberia seat in Howrah district.

"'Achhe Din' has become a disaster for all. The country will face a grave danger if the Modi government is not dethroned," she said and called upon people not to "misuse a single vote by casting in favour of the BJP".

"If the Modi government can withdraw currencies of different denominations, you (the electorate) can also cancel your votes to them. Note batil to vote bhi batil (If currency notes are cancelled then votes for BJP should also be cancelled," Banerjee, who is a strong critic of demonestisation, said at the meetings.

She said, "I have come across a recent poll analysis saying the BJP government will never return."

Describing the Modi government as a "government of demons", Banerjee said "It knows well how to deprive people of their rights and privileges in order to consolidate its political interests. This is nothing but an attack on people."

"Mr Modi (Banerjee has often referred to him as Modi Babu) and his colleagues in the saffron party also speak in highly abusive and provocative language to vitiate the environment in the country as they prefer to divide people along religious lines for political mileage," the TMC supremo said.

Appealing to the people to vote for her party candidates and help it win all the 42 LS seats in the state, she said it will help TMC form the government at the Centre with like-minded secular parties to fulfil the people's aspirations.

TMC has been claiming that it will play an important role at the Centre and in the government after the general elections.

At Pandua in Hooghly district, Banerjee said many farmers have committed suicide and thousands are unemployed. Prices of gas, diesel and petrol are rising and people are not getting money from banks during the BJP regime.

Claiming that CPI(M) is helping the BJP, she said "Now CPI-M's `harmad' (goons) have become ustads (big men) of the BJP" and questioned how a party (BJP) which is inclined towards dividing the country in the name of religion can aspire to return to power.

"How can BJP claim that it belongs to the Hindus? BJP does not have any respect for Hindu religion. The party under Modi is for creating disturbances like riots in the country", she said. Banerjee claimed that her TMC has done a lot of developmental work in places of religious worship like Tarakeswar, Gangasagar, Dakshineswar, Tarapith and Kankalitala. Continuing her attack, the TMC supremo said "BJP will destroy the country. The prime minister has a penchant for lying all the time. Now he is saying people in West Bengal are not sure of returning home and seek assurance from their mothers before leaving. "Is it true?" she asked the gathering who replied with a resounding "No".

It is common practice among Bengalis to seek their elders' permission before leaving home. Alleging that the saffron party is distributing money among the people for garnering votes, she said "BJP is a party of illiterates. What can you expect from it ?" Banerjee claimed that the saffron party will not be able to win even 80 seats in the Lok Sabha polls and in states like Andhra Pradesh, Tamil Nadu, Punjab, Kerala, West Bengal and Odisha it will not get even a single one. "In some states like Gujarat, Rajasthan votes will be split", she said.
