Maharashtra Governor Ch Vidyasagar Rao and chief minister Devendra Fadnavis tweeted on the demise of Parrikar, expressing their condolences.

“Manohar Parrikar was one of the most brilliant, cultured and visionary leaders in the contemporary politics of India. As leader of the Opposition in the Goa Legislative Assembly, as chief minister of Goa and as defence minister of India, he discharged his duty with utmost dedication, sincerity and commitment. Parrikar had a vision of development and a strong urge for the welfare of the people. A suave leader, Parrikar had friends cutting across the political lines. Parrikar served the people of his state till his last breath," Rao said.

Fadnavis noted that it is a big and irreparable loss. "His commitment and vision always kept inspiring me," he said.

NCP supremo and former defence minister Sharad Pawar said he was deeply saddened to learn about the demise of Parrikar. "We have lost an able and industrious administrator who made his mark with his simple demeanour and extraordinary intellect," he said.

Shiv Sena president Uddhav Thackeray and his cousin and MNS chief Raj Thackeray too condoled the death of Parrikar.

Former chief minister and state Congress president Ashok Chavan said, "He was a great leader and good human being."
