Poll-O-Meter: Moment of change

Last Updated 22 April 2019, 06:19 IST

The change from balloting to marking system started in the 1962 elections.

In the 1951-52 and 1957 polls, a vote was cast by putting a common ballot paper distinguished only by a serial number in the ballot box of a candidate whom he wished to vote.

In the marking system, a voter had to choose from a distinct ballot paper containing names of all candidates.

By 1967, the polls were conducted using marking system across India barring Nagaland, Andaman and Nicobar Islands and three remote Assembly seats in Himachal Pradesh
