Shiromani Akali Dal leader Inder Iqbal Singh Atwal and his brother Jasjeet Singh Atwal on Sunday joined the BJP, in the presence of senior party leaders including former Gujarat CM Vijay Rupani, union minister Hardeep Puri and party general secretary Tarun Chugh.

Several leaders have joined the party in the last few days, including Anil Antony, the son of AK Antony, former Andhra CM Kiran Kumar Reddy, and CR Kesavan, the great-grandson of C Rajagopalachari. BJP leaders said that more leaders are expected to join soon.

Atwal, the son of former Lok Sabha speaker Charanjit Singh Atwal, said that he was joining the BJP because he was impressed by their developmental policies. “If at all anyone is implementing the ideas of Babasaheb Ambedkar in a real sense, it is the government of India under PM Modi,” Atwal said.

Welcoming him into the party, Puri lauded the contributions of Atwal’s father to the country, and said several leaders have joined the BJP because they are inspired by the government’s ‘new governance model’. “Good governance is also good politics,” Puri said.
