Show '56 inch' chest, tell Xi to vacate PoK land: Sibal

Under fire over meeting with Britain's Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn, Congress on Friday sought to turn the heat on the NDA government by advising Prime Minister Narendra Modi to tell Chinese President Xi Jinping point-blank that he should stay away from the Kashmir issue.

Latching on to Xi's remarks that China was paying “close attention” to the situation in Kashmir, Congress stepped up attack on Modi, asking him to look the Chinese President into the eye and tell him to vacate 5,000 km of land in Pak-occupied Kashmir.

“Show your 56-inch chest,” Congress leader Kapil Sibal said noting that Xi had supported Pakistan Prime Minister Imran Khan on the Kashmir issue.

As Xi and Modi held their informal summit in Mamallapuram near Chennai, Congress read out a list of issues ranging from Doklam to trade deficit with China that required to be discussed with the Chinese President.

“Prime Minister Modi should tell Xi Jinping in no unclear terms that India does not need his intervention on Kashmir,” Congress spokesperson Gourav Vallabh told reporters when asked to comment on the Indian Overseas Congress delegation with Corbyn that triggered a row.

BJP President Amit Shah targeted Congress during election rallies in Maharashtra and sought an explanation from the main Opposition party why they discussed domestic issues such as Kashmir with foreign leaders.

Former union minister Manish Tewari said if Xi can say China was watching the Kashmir situation, why cannot India counter by saying it was keeping a close watch on “muzzling” of pro-democracy protests in Hong Kong.
