The Trinamool Congress (TMC) on Saturday nominated former Prasar Bharati CEO Jawhar Sircar as its candidate for the Rajya Sabha by-election seat in West Bengal.

The Election Commission has announced that the by-election will be held on July 16.

The TMC stated in a tweet that Sircar’s “invaluable contribution” to public service will help the party serve the country better.

“We are delighted to nominate Mr.@jawharsircarin the Upper House of the Parliament. Mr. Sircar spent nearly 42 years in public service & was also the former CEO of Prasar Bharati. His invaluable contribution to public service shall help us serve our country even better!,” tweeted the TMC.

Reacting to the development, Sircar said that he will highlight in Rajya Sabha how the Union Government was being run and work for the development of people.

“I was a bureaucrat and not a politician. I will raise the issues concerning the people in Rajya Sabha and work for the development of the people,” said Sircar.

He also said that it was Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee who informed him that the TMC wants to nominate him as its Rajya Sabha candidate and sought his consent.

“I agreed to the proposal. The official announcement by the TMC was made after that,” said Sircar.

Sircar was born in 1952 in Kolkata and studied in the St. Xavier's School, Presidency College (now Presidency University) and the Calcutta University.

The by-poll for the Rajya Sabha seat was necessitated with the resignation of former TMC MP Dinesh Trivedi on February 12. Trivedi eventually left the TMC and joined the BJP ahead of the Assembly elections.
