A two-day-old baby girl was abandoned in a cramped and deserted lane in Uttar Pradesh's Muzaffarnagar town, about 500 km from here, by a woman on Wednesday.

Fehmida, a resident of Gullarwali Gali locality in the town, came out of her house on hearing the cries and found the baby girl, who was wrapped up in a blanket, lying on a platform outside the doors.

The baby was rushed to the hospital, where the doctors said that her condition is stable.

"The baby was dehydrated and low on sugar...she will be fine in the next couple of days," said a doctor at the district hospital on Thursday.

The police investigation revealed that the baby girl had been abandoned around dawn by a woman.

A CCTV footage accessed by the police shows a car with a Haryana number plates coming to a halt in the lane, a woman emerging from the vehicle and then quietly putting the baby on a platform outside Fahmida's house before speeding off.

"We are trying to trace the owner of the car with the help of the registration number," said a district police officer in Muzaffarnagar.

Reports said that several people had come forward to adopt the child but the police said that they would first try to trace her real parents.
