No Shiv Sena, PDP at Sonowal's crowning event

No Shiv Sena, PDP at Sonowal's crowning event
Two major partners of the BJP-led National Democratic Alliance — Peoples’ Democratic Party and Shiv Sena — skipped the swearing-in function of Assam Chief Minister  Sarbananda Sonowal on Tuesday.

Of the 10 NDA allies, only Shiromani Akali Dal chief Parkash Singh Badal and Telugu Desam Party president Chandrababu Naidu were invited to speak and bless the Sonawal government. Other NDA allies from Bihar and Union ministers Ramvilas Paswan of LJP and Upendra Kushwaha of RLSP were just seated on the dais. Shiv Sena MP Anil Desai told DH that party president Uddhav Thackeray had received the invitation to attend the ceremony, but could not attend it as he was away from Mumbai.

A minister in the PDP-BJP government also confirmed that Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Mehbooba Mufti could not make it to the function because of the Assembly session starting on Wednesday. Deputy Chief Minister and BJP leader Nirmal Singh, however, attended the function.

Strong message
The PDP’s presence at the function could have sent a strong signal to Muslims who are in sizeable number in the state which the BJP sees as a gateway to expanding to other Northeastern states. Among BJP chief ministers, only Shivraj Singh Chauhan of Madhya Pradesh was given a chance to share his thoughts.
