No talks with Hurriyat until they drop Pakistan:J&K Guv

Jammu and Kashmir Governor Satya Pal Malik.

Jammu and Kashmir Governor Satya Pal Malik on Thursday said that no talks will be held with Hurriyat Conference leaders until they keep Pakistan out of the discussion.

“As far as Hurriyat is concerned, they don’t even go to the toilet without asking Pakistan. So till the time they don’t keep Pakistan separate, no talks will be held with them," he said while talking to reporters at SKICC, here.

“It is the job of the (Centre) government to hold talks and my job is to create conducive atmosphere for that. I am doing that. I meet everybody, and recently I met representatives from various mainstream political parties. I met Omar (Abdullah) sahab, Mehboobaji (Mufti), (Mohammad Yousuf) Tarigami sahib,” he said.

Furthermore, Malik requested the people to stay away from the gunfight sites in Kulgam until they were sanitised by the forces. “People must know, and political parties must make them understand that they should not go to the encounter sites for one or two days till they are fully sanitised,” he said.

Seven civilians were killed in Laroo village of Kulgam in a blast at the site of a gunfight on Sunday.

The governor said that there has been a decrease in violence, stone pelting and local recruitment of militants. “I don’t say it has happened because of me, but it happened due to the attitude of the people,” he said.

On the dismal voter turnout in the recently-concluded urban local bodies elections, Malik said, “This is not the first time that voter turnout has been low. Most of the parties were opposing it. Terrorists were threatening, and despite that, 10,000 people voted in Srinagar in the last phase of the polls.”

Asked whether he expects more participation of people in the upcoming Panchayat elections, he said, “As these elections will be held on non-party basis, I am sure there will be more participation of people in it. One village will get more than Rs 1 crore, and all the parties will participate.”
