Last Updated 26 August 2015, 05:14 IST

Following the violent clashes in Gujarat over politician Hardik Patel's detention, internet services such as WhatsApp has been cut off in several parts of the state to check the spreading of rumours.

The protesters from Patel community had made use of WhatsApp for circulating messages related to their campaign, police officials told NDTV.

Police also stated that miscreants can use WhatsApp for spreading rumours and mobilizing the crowd. Thus, for security reasons the Internet services will be restored only after the situation is under control, the officer added.

After being released from the custody last night, Hardik Patel had made an appeal to the protesters to maintain calm and peace using WhatsApp.

The 21-year-old Hardik Patel is leading the protest of the Patel community, demanding reservation in government jobs and colleges.
