After a violent tractor rally on Republic Day, farmers agitating against the three farm laws on Wednesday announced that they would soon march down to Parliament in May even as they released a protest calendar for the next two months.

“Other than farmers and labourers, women, Dalit-Adivasi-Bahujans, unemployed youth and every section of the society will be part of this march,” Samyukt Kisan Morcha (SKM) leader Gurnam Singh Chaduni told reporters here.

Besides the foot march to Parliament after the results of the five assembly elections, the farmers also announced sit-in protests at Food Corporation of India offices across the country on April 5, a 24-hour-blockade of the KMP Expressway on April 10, Baisakhi celebrations at the protest sites on Delhi borders on April 13, ‘Save Constitution Day’ on Babasaheb Amedkar’s birth anniversary on April 14 and programs to mark Labour Day on May 1.

Chaduni said that the march to parliament would be carried out in a “peaceful” manner, and special care would be taken to avoid a repeat of the events of January 26.

The SKM was also planning to form a committee to control protesters in case of police action during the march to Parliament.

On Republic Day, farmers taking part in the tractor rally in the capital went berserk, vandalised the Red Fort and clashed with the police, events that left several security personnel and farmers injured.

Farmers were also planning an event on May 6 to honour those who have lost their lives during the agitation that began on the borders of the national capital on November 26.

“Soil from different parts of the country will be brought to these borders and a memorial will be created for all our brothers who have lost their lives while participating in this movement,” a farmer leader said.

At the Ghazipur border, farmers issued a statement saying they would return home only after the repeal of the three farm laws and enactment of a law to ensure procurement of farm produce at minimum support price.
