In a blow to BSP supremo former Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister, Mayawati, the Supreme Court on Friday said she should pay back from her own pocket for the statues of elephants and her own self erected in Noida, Greater Noida and Lucknow.

"We are of the view that Mayawati has to reimburse the public money used for her status and that of party symbol," a bench presided over by Chief Justice Ranjan Gogoi said.

The court's strong remarks came when it took up a writ petition filed by Ravi Kant in 2009.

The bench, also comprising Justices Deepak Gupta and Sanjiv Khanna, made it clear to senior advocate Rakesh Khanna, appearing for her and senior advocate Satish Chandra Mishra, appearing for the BSP, that their party leader will have to reimburse all the money used in erecting giant statues of the leader as well as elephants.

"Don't compel us to say more. Pay all the amount," the bench told the counsel and put the matter for further hearing on April 2.
