Tension prevailed at the prestigious Banaras Hindu University (BHU) after armed assailants shot dead a student in front of one of the hostels inside the varsity campus in Varanasi.

Those booked in connection with the killing also included the woman chief proctor of the varsity Prof. Royana Singh.

The student, identified as Gaurav Singh, who studied in Master of Computer Application (MCA), was sprayed with bullets, while he was talking to his friends outside the Birla Hostel on Tuesday evening, police sources said.

Singh, who suffered serious injuries, was rushed to the hospital, where he succumbed to his injuries in the wee hours of Wednesday, sources said.

Four persons were arrested in connection with the killing, police said.

The killing triggered tension in the varsity campus and a large number of students raised slogans against the administration and demanded action against the chief proctor of the varsity. They alleged that the killers were seen in the chief proctor's office a few hours before the incident.

Reports said that irate students also ransacked a portion of the Trauma Centre at the BHU hospital. They have also closed the entry gate of the varsity and embarked upon a dharna.

Security personnel in strength had been deployed at the varsity to maintain law and order and prevent any flare up, sources said.

Earlier also there had been similar incidents inside the varsity campus. Barely a few days back armed miscreants had shot at and injured a student.
