Five CRPF personnel injured in Anantnag grenade attack

Five Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) personnel were injured after militants attacked paramilitary deployment party in Bijbehara area of south Kashmir's Anantnag district on Thursday.

Reports said that a loud explosion followed by firing was heard near Goriwan area of Bijbehara, the home town of former chief minister Mehbooba Mufti. A police officer said militants lobbed a grenade towards a CRPF party near Goriwan.

In the blast, five CRPF men of 90 Battalion, sustained splinter injuries who were taken to a nearby hospital for treatment, he said.

The injured CRPF me were identified as Ominder Singh, Pankaj Kumar, Nitin Kumar, B Kumar and Yoginder Singh.

Reports said soon after the incident, security forces launched searches in the area to nab the attackers. The attack came just a day after two Lashker-e-Taiba militants were killed in nearby Anantnag town.

Meanwhile, a militant was killed in an ongoing encounter with army in Handwara area of north Kashmir's Kupwara district. Sources said that army’s 21 Rashtriya Rifles launched a cordon-and-search-operation in Sudal village of Handwara following inputs about the presence of militants.

“As the army search party was moving in the area, the hiding militants fired upon them. In the retaliatory fire, one militant has been killed so far,” they said and added the operation was on.
