Now, Devyani to face music in Adarsh scam

After being transferred to India following a major diplomatic row with the US, IFS officer Devyani Khobragade, along with her father Uttam Khobragade, has landed in trouble yet again after the CBI indicated that it would file a charge sheet against her in the Adarsh housing society scam.

Investigators said they have unearthed evidence revealing that the flat was purchased through a false declaration and hiding information about allotment of a flat to her under the government quota, besides raising questions about the land they possess. Under the CBI lens are nearly 25 alleged illegal beneficiaries who were allotted flats in the Adarsh Housing Society.

Retired High Court Judge J A Patil’s report on the scam brought out alleged irregularities in the allotment. The report termed 25 out of 102 members of the housing society as ineligible, including Devyani. Devyani, India’s former deputy consul general in New York, was arrested by US authorities last December over alleged visa fraud, triggering a major diplomatic row between the two countries. Her father Uttam Khobragade, an IAS officer, is a former CEO of Maharashtra Housing and Area Development Authority.

The scam came to light in 2007-08 when the National Alliance People's Movement alleged that sanction of the 31-storeyed building was given in contravention of environmental regulations and Coastal Zone Regulations.
