These lectures, both in video and web format, have been developed jointly by the experts from seven IITs and the IISc in collaboration with the Union Ministry of Human Resource Development (MHRD). The initiative aims at increasing the reach of “high quality” engineering and sciences education across our country.

“The initiative has been taken as the number of institutions having fully qualified and trained teachers in all disciplines forms a small fraction in our country. The supplementary e-learning contents will benefit those students who are studying in such institutions,” a top HRD official said.

The lecture series on different branches of engineering can be accessed at the website of the National Programme on Technology Enhanced Learning (NPTEL). The web contents can also be accessed by students using their mobile phone, he said.

125 courses in engg
As of now, the website contains 125 courses in engineering in web format with each course containing at least 40 hours of lectures by eminent teachers of IITs and IISc, the official said.

Apart from this, 135 courses have so far been developed in video format with each of these courses comprising of approximately 40 hours of lectures, he said.
The lecture series includes courses on civil engineering, computer science & engineering, electrical engineering, electronics engineering, mechanical engineering, ocean engineering, biotechnology, mining and metallurgy.

Apart from students, young teachers in the field of engineering can also benefit through the lecture series available at the website.

The NPTEL has plans to upload quality lecture series on over 1,000 courses, both at undergraduate and post graduate level, covering various disciplines including technology, management, sciences and humanities apart from engineering.  “The courses will be completed by 2012 and will be available to every one free of cost,” an official associated with NPTEL said.

The NPTEL, funded by the MHRD,  is the country’s largest technical knowledge dissemination programme through Information Communication and Technology in the higher education sector.
