Now, online recharge facility by Delhi Metro

Last Updated 09 May 2013, 21:24 IST

Now you can recharge your Metro card online. The only hurdle is that a commuter has to go to a metro station and place his smart card on ticket reader-cum-add value machine to complete the process.

The first such machine was inaugurated at Barakhamba Road Metro station by Delhi Metro Rail Corporation’s managing director Mangu Singh on Thursday.

This new facility can be availed by creating an account and registering your card either on www.dmrcsmartcard.com or www.delhimetrorail.com.

Commuters can add money to their cards by using ‘quick top up’ option. “After completing the top up process, commuters will have to manually validate their recharge by using ticket reader-cum-add value machines installed at Metro stations,” said Singh.

A total of 39 such machines have been installed at 13 Metro stations, including Dilshad Garden, Shahdara, Welcome, Seelampur,  Shastri Park, Pragati Maidan, Karkarduma, Nirman Vihar, Laxmi Nagar, Barakhamba, RK Ashram Marg, Jhandewalan and Rajendra Place. “The ticket reader-cum-add value machine is a touch screen-based device which also provides information about the current amount, last recharge as well as the last five entry-exit transactions,” he said.

The minimum transaction amount will remain the same at Rs 100 and the card can be recharged maximum up to a limit of Rs 1,000.

At present, tokens and smart cards can be purchased or recharged by paying cash only at specified counters, machines or customer care centres at stations. “The upcoming facility will not only help people avoid unnecessary queues, but it will also aim to reduce cash transactions at ticket counters,” he added.

The DMRC has partnered with ICICI Bank for the launch of this online automated fare collection process. The bank has integrated its payment getaway for recharging DMRC cards online.

At present, about 69.75 per cent of the Metro commuters use smart cards. Around 17,000 smart cards are sold every day at various stations and about one crore cards are in circulation.
