OBC commission term extended till November

Last Updated 21 September 2018, 12:12 IST

The commission set up to look into sub-categorisation of Other Backward Classes (OBCs) has got yet another extension of its term till November this year.

The Union Cabinet, chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, on Thursday approved the extension.

“Cabinet has approved the extension of the term of the commission to examine the issue of Sub-categorisation of Other Backward Classes in the Central List till November 2018,” the government said in a statement.

“Based on the emanating information from the data as processed and analysed, the Commission has expressed that a round of discussion with the States and their Backward Classes Commissions was required before finalising the sub-categorised lists and the report,” the government said, justifying the extension.

The report of the Commission is much awaited as the stratification of the OBC quota could lead to quota within quota, which may impact national politics.

This could affect educationally and socially advanced communities among backward classes like Yadavas, who have benefited from the policy of positive discrimination recommended by the Mandal Commission.
