Odisha gang-rape victim examined: AIIMS

Last Updated 20 February 2012, 18:56 IST

Dr Munjuri Tripathy, a neurology expert from All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS), New Delhi  after examining the health condition of the  Pipli rape victim at the Sriram Chandra Bhanja medical college hospital in Cuttack on Monday, said that there has been almost nil improvement in her health status ever since she was admitted in the hospital last month.

“She is in a vegetated state. Her brain has been severely damaged”, conceded Dr Tripathy who visited the Cuttack hospital on the request of the Odisha government. The 19-year-old girl underwent an examination for nearly two hours.  The AIIMS expert, however, expressed her satisfaction over the level of treatment in the medical college hospital and said, the treatment can not be any better in health institutions outside the state. “The standard of care is quite good here.

“There is no need to take the patient outside the state”, she told reporters. The Cuttack hospital authorities said, it will be difficult to predict when the victim’s health condition would start improving.

“It is very difficult to say when and how much her health condition would improve. We are trying our best”, Dr Bhubananada Moharana, the emergency officer of the SCB medical college and hospital said.

Earlier, a team of forensic experts had visited the Odisha hospital to check the health condition of the victim. The team has already submitted its report to the crime branch of the state police which has been submitted to the Orissa High Court.

The crime branch is investigating the alleged gang rape case under the supervision of the High Court.
