The Hamro Sikkim Party (HSP) led by footballer-turned-politician Bhaichung Bhutia has decided to make the “questionable claims” of the Sikkim Democratic Front (SDF) government one of its key poll issues for upcoming Assembly and Lok Sabha elections in the state.

Speaking to DH on Monday HSP spokesperson Biraj Adhikari said that his party will point out to the public that the success of organic farming in Sikkim is only “on paper”.

“Organic farming in Sikkim is all on paper. If you look at the grassroots level you will find out that the claims on the success of organic farming are extremely questionable. Only a handful of farmers are being propped up by the state government,” Adhikari said.

He further alleged that the general public in Sikkim has never been actually involved in it.

Pointing out that being a mountainous state, Adhikari said that Sikkim never had much of a large scale farming whatever little farming was being done in some villages has always been organic.

He also said that the people of Sikkim are yet to get any financial benefit from the so called success of organic farming touted by Chief Minister Pawan Chamling.

“The organic farming which he (Chamling) likes to highlight so much is yet to generate any financial benefit for our people. Till now the financial benefit is nill,” Adhikari said.

According to a release issued by the HSP leadership that the party has formed an alliance with like-minded parties and the alliance will contest all the 32 Assembly seat and the sole Lok Sabha seats in Sikkim.

Both the elections are likely to be held simultaneously.

“The alliance shall contest all 32 seats of the state Assembly and the sole Lok Sabha seat from Sikkim. Name of alliance, it’s partners, seat sharing details and names of candidates shall be announced in a joint press conference,” stated the release.

It also said that the HSP will focus on the issues of welfare state, social justice, democratic liberties and accountable governance.

Denying the allegation SDF spokesperson Bhim Dahal said that “ HSP is left with just two or three major leaders and is making baseless allegations without knowing the facts at the grassroots level.”
