Owaisi threatened over his Kashmir statement

The Majlis chief, a strong critic of the Sangh Parivar and Prime Minister Narendra Modi, for the first time backed the government on the human rights issue in Kashmir. He rejected the report of the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights (UNHRC) on the situation in the Kashmir valley, saying the world body has no right to interfere in the internal matters of India. Hyderabad MP and president of All India Majlis-e- Ittehadul Muslimeen (AIMIM) Asaduddin Owaisi has received online threats for his rejection of the UN rights chief report on alleged human rights violations in Kashmir. The threats allegedly came from the same social media accounts that issued death threats to the veteran Kashmiri journalist Shujaat Bhukari, who was shot dead in Srinagar recently.

According to Syed Abdul Kashaf, the social media head of AIMIM, the party has brought the matter of threats to the notice of the cyber crime cell of Hyderabad police and Twitter India. “Following our complaint, Twitter India has suspended two of the accounts,” Kashaf said.

Betrayal charge

Earlier, Asad tweeted that he will oppose Modi till his last breath. “But when it comes to the country’s sovereignty, we support the government, irrespective of the party in power," Owaisi said. Following his tweets, some of the users accused him of betrayal and attacked him for backing the government on Kashmir. An independent MLA from Kashmir, Engineer Rashid, even accused Owaisi of distorting the facts and misleading the country on the ground situation in the Kashmir valley.

In a statement, the independent MLA pointed out that even Owaisi has every right to defend his country. His claim that Muslims in the rest of the country stand by the government is laughable. Rejecting the UNHRC report is an indication that the political class in the country is determined to mislead the people, and the world, he said.
