Police use water cannon to stop BJP activists during protest rally against SSC scam

The protest march was led by the national president of the saffron party's youth front, Tejasvi Surya

Tejasvi Surya, Bangalore South MP and Bharatiya Janata Yuva Morcha national president on Tuesday led a protest rally in Salt Lake, on the eastern fringes of Kolkata, to demand a transparent appointment process in state government jobs, and for securing jobs for candidates who have appeared in merit lists.

The rally was obstructed on the way, and police used water cannons to prevent protesters from moving ahead.

“Our stand is very clear. The law and order situation has deteriorated (in Bengal) in the last year, and the whole country has seen it. Minor girls are being raped, and youth from the Dalit society have been murdered. The crime rate is on the rise every day. Law and order has completely collapsed in West Bengal. We are very clear that Mamata Banerjee has failed her constitutional duties and she is in no capacity to lead the state any further,” Surya responded, addressing a press conference when asked about the law and order situation in West Bengal.

Surya said that an important issue was raised by the Yuva morcha, and a walk was organised towards Bikash Bhavan (which houses the state education department’s offices). A peaceful agitation was brutally attacked by the police and water cannons were used, it’s unfortunate, he said.

He further alleged that police lathi-charged protesters and the leftover 25 party workers were severely injured and admitted to hospitals. Despite having requested police officials for an ambulance or other transport to take the injured to the hospital, no help was offered, and the injured had to be taken away in taxis or auto-rickshaws, Surya added.

“Our mistake was that we were demanding a transparent selection process from Mamata Banerjee and her government… In my parliamentary constituency, thousands of people come from Bengal for studying and for jobs. They are compelled to do so, as education here has turned poor,” he said, adding that the Yuva morcha agitations will be taken up in the districts of West Bengal, in the days to come.
