Prithviraj Chavan to clarify stand on CVC row today

Parliamentary Affairs Minister Harshavardhan Patil on Monday said the chief minister would make a statement on the Thomas issue on Tuesday.

The CVC issue had rocked the state Legislature for the first two days of the budget session with the Opposition demanding immediate explanation from Chavan on his role.

Chavan, who was Union minister of state in the Prime Minister’s Office, was in charge of the Department of Personnel, Training and Pensions last year. It was his department which had shortlisted Thomas for the CVC post without mentioning the palmolive corruption case pending against him.

Prime Minister Manmohan Singh had himself stated this fact during a discussion on the issue in the Rajya Sabha. Chavan even tried to defend himself by stating that vigilance clearance to Thomas was given by the Kerala government and there was no need for his department to refer that matter, which again invited strong protest and condemnation from the Opposition.

Since his coming to the state as the chief minister, Chavan has been enjoying a perceived “Mr Clean” image. However, of late, there is a growing resentment against him, even within the ruling coalition circles, over the slow pace of decision making by his office.
