Rahul attempts to regain tribal voters in Rajasthan

Last Updated 20 September 2018, 09:19 IST

In an attempt to woo farmers and tribals of Rajasthan, Congress president Rahul Gandhi is set to address a rally at Sangwara in Dungarpur district - Vagad region - on Friday.

The region, comprising districts of Banswara and Dungarpur with a total of eight Assembly constituencies, became crucial after the BJP trounced the Congress in the 2013 elections. The region has a strong tribal population and Rahul will be looking forward to addressing their concerns along with those of farmers and women.

This will be Rahul's first rally after he launched the party's election campaign in Jaipur in August. "We are expecting lakhs of people to attend the rally. The venue becomes important as it is in the heart of the tribal land of Rajasthan. People from nearby districts of Chittorgarh, Udaipur and Rajsamand will also attend the show", Rajasthan Congress chief Sachin Pilot said.

Rahul will visit the state several times ahead of the elections, Sachin added. A poster of the rally was also released on his Twitter account. The poster with the slogan ‘Aao Chalein Pardarshita Avem Sushasan ki Aur’ urges the people to support the Congress to bring "transparency and good governance" in the state.

In a day-long visit, Rahul is also expected to visit local shrines, including Baneswhar Dham, an ancient Shiva temple.

Last month, BJP president Amit Shah also reached out to the tribal people but in the Mewar region. He addressed the 'Rajasthan Gaurav Yatra' at the Charbhuja temple, Rajsamand.

Assembly elections in the BJP-ruled state is due later this year.
