Railway cops challenge Arunima's story

Last Updated 26 April 2011, 17:52 IST

Arunima had lost her leg after being allegedly pushed out of a moving train near Bareilly by unidentified miscreants after she resisted an attempted robbery on April 11.

Additional director general of police, Railway A K Jain said that there were many ‘loopholes’ in Arunima's statement and the evidence gathered so far did not coroborate her claims. “Arunima was depressed on the day of incident,” Jain claimed.

He said that the chain, which the miscreants tried to snatch from her, was found in her purse. “Furthermore Arunima  was found lying unconscious at a distance of 16 ft from the tracks... she could not have fallen there had she been pushed out of the train,” he said.
Jain also contested Sonu's claim that the train was running at a high speed. “The train had halted at Chaneti station and the spot where she had fallen was barely 250 metres from there. Obviously the train must have been moving very slowly,” he pointed out.

“Sonu was depressed and had contacted her friend in Delhi...her plan to go to Delhi had been made suddenly,” he said. The official also said that there was no test planned by the CISF on April 11 last as claimed by Arunima.

Arunima’s friend identified as Sanjay had told the police that she was depressed.
Incidentally soon after the incident, Jain had said that it was yet to be ascertained if Sonu was thrown out of the compartment or accidentally fell on the tracks.

The official had also expressed surprise that no one had lodged any complaint with the police on the day the incident reportedly occurred.
