Rain causes waterlogging, jams across Delhi

Last Updated 22 March 2019, 07:02 IST

Heavy showers caused water logging and traffic jams in several parts of Delhi on Friday.

The rain which started around 1 pm and lasted for two hours resulted in waterlogged roads, causing severe inconvenience to people who were stuck on road for hours.

South Delhi was worst hit with severe traffic congestion due to waterlogging at the stretch between IIT-Delhi and Munirka, Moti Bagh, Chirag Delhi, Moolahchand, South Extension, Yusuf Sarai, AIIMS, Andrews Ganj, Greater Kailash, RK Puram and Nehru Place.

“In West Delhi, traffic jam was witnessed in Narayana and Punjabi Bagh. In New Delhi traffic between Mandi House and W Point witnessed slow movement,” said a senior Delhi Traffic Police officer.

Traffic between Moti Bagh and Moolchand flyover in South Delhi  was particularly bad due to the ongoing repair work in the Defence Colony flyover. According to the traffic police, water pumps didn’t work properly at the flyover resulting in rain water accumulating in several places of the flyover leading to jam.

According to eyewitnesses, due to water puddles in some roads, a four-lane road was reduced to one-lane creating bottle necks and causing miles-long traffic line. The MeT department said that Safdarjung observatory recorded 29.8 mm of rainfall while 0.8 mm of rainfall was recorded at Palam observatory till 8.30 pm.

In some places breakdown of vehicles added misery to the already pathetic traffic movement.

In a series of tweets, the traffic police informed commuters about the obstructions on various stretches across the city.

“Obstruction was witnessed in traffic in the carriageway from Liberty towards Anand Parbat due to breakdown of a bus,” tweeted the Traffic Police.

“Obstruction in traffic in the carriageway from Noida towards New Kondli due to an accident at Kondli extension. Kindly avoid the stretch,” the Traffic Police added.

In West Delhi between Punjabi Bagh flyover and Rajouri Garden flyover traffic moved at snail’s pace due to waterlogging at several parts of the road.

The Delhi Traffic Police deployed additional staff to ease out the situation and water pumps were also used in several places to pump out water from roads and flyovers.
