Raj schools to celebrate Valentine's Day as 'Matr-Pitr Pujan Diwas'

The government schools in BJP-ruled Rajasthan will celebrate Valentine's Day by observing 'Matra-Pitra Pujan Divas' on February 14 every year from 2019. In a bid to counter 'Valentine's Day', the education department has included the event in its yearly calendar-'Shivir Panchang'.

As per the order copy, issued on April 23, 2018, parents of those studying in government schools will be invited to the school where their wards will honour them. They will also spend time in the campus.

The order has come one month after the State Education Minister, Vasudev Devnani, said in the Rajasthan Assembly that the move was meant to inculcate a sense of love among students for their parents. Devnani, who is known for controversies, said, “The aim is to instil a sense of love for parents. It is compulsory that the students learn to love their parents first. They can love anyone else thereafter. The government wants the students to love their parents first before anyone else".

Devnani was also in the news for revising the course textbooks. He also removed the name of India’s first Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru from school textbooks and included a chapter on Emergency. He was again caught in controversy when his department included a historian's view which suggested that Mewar ruler Maharana Pratap was defeated by Mughal emperor Akbar in the Battle of Haldighati.
