RITES official held on bribery charges

A senior official of the RITES Ltd was arrested on Saturday by the CBI on charges of receiving a bribe of Rs 15 lakh from an infrastructure company representative.

K Venkateshwara Rao, the Group General Manager (Civil) at RITES Project Office in Secunderabad, was apprehended while he was receiving the amount reportedly from Tamil Nadu-based KVR Infrastructure Ltd's project manager Shankar, a CBI spokesperson said.

According to the CBI, Shankar was deputed to deliver the amount.

Rao had reportedly demanded the money for clearing pending bills to the tune of Rs 1.5 crore out of a total contract value of Rs 11 crore of the company, it said.

Searches were conducted at the official and residential premises of the accused and the hotel room of Shankar. The accused will be produced before the court on Sunday.

A case has been registered under Section 120-B (criminal conspiracy of Indian Penal Code and relevant provisions of Prevention of Corruption Act.
