RS adjourned for brief period over railway station renaming

The renaming of Mughal Sarai railway station on Friday led to sparring between Opposition and ruling BJP in Rajya Sabha leading to a brief adjournment.

The issue of renaming the station under Deen Dayal Upadhyay was raised by Samajwadi Party MP Naresh Agarwal who objected to the mater and wanted the House to suspend the business and discuss it.

He said the government is changing names of all such facilities and went to the extend of saying, they may even want to change the name of Delhi.

Minister of State for Parliamentary Affairs Mukthar Abbas Naqvi countered Agarwal saying they are more concerned about Mughals and not Upadhyay. "Their thinking is not right," he said while adding that all institutions could not be named after Gandhis and Nehru.

As Deputy Chairman PJ Kurien denied permission to suspend business as it "was not a matter" to do so, SP MPs rushed to the Well of the House and shouted slogans. They received support from MPs from Congress, CPI (M), CPI, Trinamool Congress and other parties.

SP MP Neeraj Shekhar was heard saying that the government was honouring those who have not contributed anything to the country and it was for  first time that a railway station was named after a person.

Naqvi was quick to counter Shekhar, saying Upadhyay conceived the concept of 'Antyodaya' and is a respected leader of the country. "They want everything to be named after Gandhis and Nehru," he added.

As SP MPs continued shouting, Kurien adjourned the House for ten minutes.
