Ruckus at Kerala House canteen over serving 'beef'

Last Updated 27 October 2015, 04:30 IST

There was ruckus in the staff canteen of Kerala House here on Monday when three men arrived there, accusing the management of serving ‘beef’.

Police also reached the canteen after someone phoned police control room with the complaint.

“We received a PCR call at 3.30 pm about beef being served at Kerala House. We intimated the authorities of Kerala House and police personnel went inside the place to ensure that no incident takes place,” said Jatin Narwal, Deputy Commissioner of Police (New Delhi).
According to Kerala House officials, the three unidentified came to the canteen ‘accompanied’ by two policemen.  Police, however, denied the suggestion that their men came along with the people who created the ruckus.

“At 4 pm, when the lunch was being served, three people accompanied by two policemen arrived inside Kerala House and started shouting at the staff that beef is served here, after that they started inspecting the food,” said Joseph, Assistant Protocol Officer, Kerala House.
“After 15 minutes Assistant Commissioner of Police (ACP) arrived at the spot and the situation was brought under control,” Joseph added.

According to Kerala House officials, they serve buffalo meat on some day.

“We purchase our meat products from authorised meat sellers in Delhi. Nowhere in Delhi cow’s meat is sold then how can we have it on the menu. We serve ‘beef fry’ occasionally, and it’s buffalo’s meat not cow’s,” said Joseph.

However, the ruckus has taken its toll. Even buffalo meat may not be served now.  Joseph said Kerala House wants to avoid controversy, and is thinking of taking it off the menu.
