Three weeks after making him the interim head, the Government has now appointed senior Indian Revenue Service (IRS) officer Sanjay Kumar Mishra as the full-time chief of the Enforcement Directorate (ED).

The order was issued by Department of Personnel and Training (DoPT) on Saturday night after the Appointments Committee of Cabinet headed by Prime Minister Narendra Modi cleared it. Mishra, who succeeded Karnail Singh, has a two-year tenure.

Mishra, a 1984-batch IRS officer of the Income Tax cadre, was on October 27 appointed as the principal special director in the central probe agency and was entrusted with the "additional" charge of ED director for three months.

The full-time appointment came after Mishra, who was Chief Commissioner of Income Tax Department in Delhi before the ED appointment, was empanelled as an Additional Secretary in the central government.

Mishra has wide-ranging experience in investigating foreign tax matters and handled the Vodafone tax dispute.
