A 'sadhvi' (woman disciple) was allegedly gang raped at a famous temple in Uttar Pradesh's Mathura district, about 400 kilometres from here.

According to police sources here, the 'sadhvi', who hailed from Odisha, was gang-raped by two people, both workers at the famous Radha Rani temple at Barsana in the district late on Monday night.

One of the accused, who was identified as Kanahiya Yadav, was nabbed by the police on Friday, police said in Mathura.

Sources said that the sadhvi had narrated the incident to some local people who accompanied her to the local police for lodging a complaint a day after the incident but she was shooed away by the cops.

The matter came to limelight on Thursday after the CCTV footage showed two people molesting the woman. The footage showed one of them reaching there again a little later and forcibly taking away the sadhvi, who was sleeping in the hall of the temple, toward a corner.

The victim said that the accused persons took her to their room inside the temple premises and gang-raped her. The victim, who was a resident of Odisha, had been living at the temple for the past few years as a 'sadhvi' (disciple).

The CCTV footage allegedly revealed the identity of Kanahiya, who was a 'chowkidar' (guard) at the temple, sources said. The other accused was also said to be a worker at the temple.

The Radha Rani temple in Barasana is a famous temple and it is thronged by millions of devotees of Lord Krishna from across the world. According to the Hindu mythology, Barasana was the home of Radha, the eternal consort of Lord Krishna.

Police said that a massive manhunt had been launched to nab the other culprit, who was absconding.
