SC allows quotas for SC/STs in promotions

A vacation bench of Justices Adarsh Kumar Goel and Ashok Bhushan told Additional Solicitor General Maninder Singh, appearing for the Centre, that the government can provide reservation in promotion to SC/ST staff as per the law.

The Supreme Court on Tuesday said the Union government was not barred from promoting SC/ST employees in “accordance with law”, after the Centre contended that their advancement was stuck due to previous orders.

A vacation bench of Justices Adarsh Kumar Goel and Ashok Bhushan told Additional Solicitor General Maninder Singh, appearing for the Centre, that the government can provide reservation in promotion to SC/ST staff as per the law.

“It is made clear that the Union of India is not debarred from making promotions in accordance with law, subject to further orders, pending further consideration of the matter,” the bench said in its order.
