SC castigates Delhi BJP MP for misplaced bravado

Last Updated 22 November 2018, 07:04 IST

The Supreme Court on Thursday castigated Delhi BJP president Manoj Tiwari for showing "misplaced bravado" by breaking sealing of a premise here.

Describing him as a "rebel without a cause", a bench of Justices Madan B Lokur and Deepak Gupta what is more shocking and disconcerting xdd is that he was an elected representative of the people and chose to defy the law.

The court, however, decided to close contempt proceedings initiated against Tiwari, MP, for breaking the seal of the premise in East Delhi, put on by a Court-appointed monitoring committee.

But the court minced no words to hold that Tiwari acted irresponsibly and its consequences could be devastating.

"He took law into his hands. We are extremely pained at the machismo shown by him," the bench said, asking should an elected representative start defying law, what would happen to the Rule of Law in the country.

What is more shocking is his reply to justify his action that he was a popular leader and he had no option on the fateful date as a mob of 1500 would have gone berserk, the court noted.

"We don't intend to proceed against him. We hope better sense would prevail," the bench said, leaving the issue of action to his political party.

The top court initiated contempt proceedings against Tiwari on September 19.

On his appearance before the court, Tiwari justified his action, saying he was an elected representative and had to be accountable to the people. He said his position was different from the judges who enjoyed cosy set up.
