SC pulls up pvt medical colleges in Kerala

Saying that the colleges should not take admissions randomly, a bench of Justices P Sathasivam and A K Patnaik said that the admissions in the undergraduate MBBS and Post Graduate courses would be subject to the outcome of the matters pending before the Kerala High Court.

It also said that the Medical Council of India would be free to take action in case it found that the colleges had violated its regulations of admission. “You have messed up things. This court has to put a stop to it,” the Bench said after being told that as many as four colleges in the state had used random criteria for filling the seats.
The court was hearing a petition filed by Kerala Private Medical Colleges challenging the objections raised to the admission process by the MCI.

The MCI alleged that the colleges were flouting the admission norms and demanding donation from the candidates.

The statutory body for regulating medical education in the country had also accused the colleges of taking admission without following the merit as criterion.

COMED-K counselling

The court also directed the Consortium of Medical, Engineering and Dental Colleges of Karnataka (COMED-K) to hold counselling and finish admission on remaining 44 seats in PG medical courses in private colleges by Thursday evening.

At the outset, Karnataka’s private medical and dental colleges association submitted a list of five candidates who have got admission in the PG courses. The counsel, appearing for COMED-K wanted extension of time for admission till July 4, which was declined by the court.

The State government’s counsel objected to a plea made by the COMED-K to fill the seats as per their own fee structure on account of heavy investment on infrastructure and other facilities.

The court, however, said that if the COMED-K failed to fill up the seats as per the guidelines of the Medical Council of India, it would remain vacant and would not fall in the government’s kitty.
