Schoolboy hit by javelin in Delhi school

An 11-year-old student of a government school in south Delhi’s Chittaranjan Park sustained grievous injuries after being accidentally hit by a javelin on Tuesday. Roshan Lama, a Class VI student, has been admitted to All India Institute of Medical Sciences’ trauma centre, where he is battling for life.

Father of the victim, Suraj Bhan Lama, a driver, said the incident occurred at 3:45 pm. “Like every day, around 12:30 pm, Roshan left home in Chirag Dilli for the Sarvodaya Government School, around one kilometre from his house. During recess, he went to the playground where students generally play football and cricket. However, some Class XII students were practising javelin throwing there,” Lama told Deccan Herald.

A javelin suddenly hit Roshan in the head, near his left ear. He collapsed and started bleeding, said a senior police officer.

Students informed school administration immediately. Roshan was immediately taken to Hah Centenary Hospital at Jamia Hamdard and later referred to AIIMS.
The school authorities informed his father and the police around 4:15 pm. After they arrived at the hospital, Roshan was shifted from the intensive care unit to trauma centre.

Roshan’s parents held the school management responsible for the incident, questioning how could the students access a javelin at recess. “Due to the negligent approach and careless attitude of the school authorities, the incident occurred. Guilty officials should be prosecuted and we expect a fair probe into the case,” said Lama.

The police have registered a case under Section 337 (causing hurt by act endangering life or personal safety of others) of the Indian Penal Code against the school’s physical training instructor Sushil Kumar Sharma. He has been arrested.
A Delhi Education Department official said Sushil Kumar’s contract has been cancelled and a two-member committee constituted to inquire into the matter.
