A senior leader of Hindu Yuva Vahini (HYV) threatened government officials of chopping off their hands if they failed to ''show respect'' to the members of the outfit and refused to do what they were told.

HYV is an outfit formed by Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath.

Atul Singh, state vice-president of the HYV, while addressing a workers' meeting in state's Kushinagar district, about 350 kilometre from Lucknow, on Saturday said that the officials would be ''thrashed'' with shoes if they didn't oblige to HYV workers, when they are approached.

''If our workers are not shown respect and their work is not done, then their (officials') hands will be chopped off by a sword," Singh said.

Another senior leader of the outfit said that he had got the doors and walls in the areas in his Assembly constituency, where there were mosques and Islamic seminaries, painted saffron.

Earlier too HYV activists have taken law in their hands and acted as vigilantes.

A few months ago, an old Muslim man was lynched reportedly by HYV activists, in state's communally sensitive Bulandshahar district, for helping two lovers of different communities elope.

They had also publicly assaulted a Muslim youth and dragged him to a police station in Meerut, accusing him of indulging in 'love jihad'.

A few months ago, HYV activists barged into a church in Maharajganj district during a prayer and assaulted priests, claiming that the priests were ''forcing'' people to convert to Christianity.

The HYV members have also been accused of threatening and assaulting policemen.
