Five construction workers fell to their death from ninth floor of an under-construction government housing project on the outskirts of Hyderabad on Thursday.

The tragic incident took place in Rampalli village of Keesara block of Medchal district when several workers engaged in concrete work on the ninth floor, were carrying the concrete from ground to the floor on a rope. They all lost control and fell off. Four died on the spot and one succumbed to his injuries on the way.
Agitated workers staged a protest at the site denouncing the negligent attitude of the contractor towards safety of workers. They ransacked the furniture in the contractor’s office room and pelted stones on the window panes.
Malkajgiri deputy commissioner of police, Umamaheswara Sarma rushed to the spot and brought the situation under control. The contractor assured to pay compensation to the bereaved families. He also promised to provide the required safety arrangements for the workers. Hyderabad Mayor Bontu Rammohan also assured the bereaved families of support from the government side.
The state government has been building double bedroom flats for the poor across the state under the weaker section housing scheme. The project at Rampalli is nearing completion.
