Heatwave warning in Kerala's Kozhikode district

Last Updated 04 March 2019, 17:19 IST

The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) has warned of a heatwave at parts of Kozhikode district in North Kerala on March 6 and 7.

According to the IMD forecast, the temperature in Kozhikode district can go up to 37 degree Celsius in those days. On Monday the maximum temperature recorded in the district was 35 degree Celsius.

Heatwave condition in 'very likely' over parts of Kozhikode on March 6 and 7, said the IMD alert.

Meanwhile, experts also forecast that the insufficient North East (NE) monsoon and summer showers could even lead to drought in some parts of the state.

Sources at the Kerala Ground water department said that though the overall shortage of NE monsoon in Kerala was only three percent, some districts like Kasargod and Palakkad suffered a drop of 38 percent. Summer showers was nil. Hence these parts could suffer a drought unless there are summer showers in the coming weeks.

Though there were reports that Kerala may suffer drought as an aftermath of the floods of last year, so far there was no scientific evidence in this regard, said sources.
