The police said Jagadeesh, who was at the wheel, lost control of the vehicle and ploughed the SUV into the crowd at the bus stop.

Investigations are underway to ascertain whether the driver was under the influence of alcohol when the incident took place at 9.30 am on Wednesday.

The incident took place in Sundarapuram on the state highway connecting Coimbatore with Pollachi. The speeding car hit an autorickshaw that was parked alongside the road. The auto crashed into a flower shop and an electric pole.

"This is an unfortunate incident. The police have taken a blood sample of the driver to check if he was drunk while driving the car,” Coimbatore District Collector Hariharan said.
