Speeding on sports bike kills three engineers

Three engineers were killed when their sports bike flipped, crashing into a road divider and an electricity pole in northwestern Bengaluru.

Police are certain that speeding caused the accident on the well-lit and well-paved Siddaiah Puranik Road near the Government Unani Medical College around 12.15 am on Monday.

The three men — Karthik, 25, from Kengeri; Anil, 29, from Machohalli; and Srinath, 28, from T Narasipura, Mysuru, — had eaten dinner at the house of Karthik’s sister near Avanur Circle in Basaveshwara Nagar and were headed towards KHB Layout. They were to go to their respective places from there. They rode Yamaha YZF R15, an entry-level sports bike.

Karthik was at the wheel while Anil and Srinath were on the pillion. As soon as he pulled into the medical college, Karthik lost control of the motorcycle. Within seconds, it crashed into the road divider and the electricity pole. All of them sustained grievous head injuries and died instantly, a police officer said, adding that none was wearing a helmet.

The victims were taken to the Victoria Hospital where doctors declared them brought dead.

The jurisdictional Kamakshipalaya traffic police informed the youths’ families who collected the bodies after the post-mortem from the Victoria Hospital on Monday. Police have registered a case of accidental death due to rash and negligent riding against Karthik.

“This stretch of Siddaiah Puranik Road was developed under the TenderSURE project and is well-lit. It’s neither bumpy nor has any potholes. We suspect speeding caused the accident,” said a senior police officer who was part of a team that inspected the accident spot.

Anil was an engineer at HAL in Nashik, Maharashtra, and was to get engaged on May 9. His marriage was scheduled for November, said the inspector of the Kamakshipalya police station.

Srinath worked for a company at KR Circle while Karthik was employed by the Karnataka Rural Infrastructure Development Limited (KRIDL).
