A man undergoing life term in Tihar jail is ready to walk down the aisle as the Supreme Court has granted him two-day interim bail. His fiancée is also ready to tie the nuptial knot.
However, he is unable to bear expenses of police escort of six personnel who had to accompany him during his ceremony. Thus, his whole marriage plan is all set to go awry. More than six months have gone by since the top court allowed him two-day relief.
On Friday, convict Vishal asked a bench of Justices D Y Chandrachud and M R Shah to reduce the number of police personnel. His counsel pleaded he could afford to pay for the duties of two police personnel who are sufficient to escort him.
The court, however, declined to grant him any relief, in view of pendency of other criminal cases.
The bench said he had to bear the expenses of Rs 2.5 lakh to be paid to the police department.
The Delhi police led by Additional Solicitor General S V Raju said the convict had to remain under the police escort of at least six personnel in view of apprehension that he may abscond.
A status report filed by jail authorities indicated that the appellant’s fiancee is living separately from her parents and that she stated that she wishes to marry him.
He was convicted under Section 302 (murder) of the IPC and his appeal was pending before the High Court. There were, however, four other cases against the appellant, and his jail conduct after 2016 was not reported to be unsatisfactory.
The court had allowed him two-day of interim bail under the police escort in plain clothes at his cost.
