Surat rape-murder case victim's mom also dead: police

Ahmedabad crime branch has handed over Harahrai Gurjar, who is accused of kidnapping, rape and murder of a nine-year-old girl, to Surat Police for further investigation, after he confessed to having killed her mother also.

He was arrested from Gangapur in Rajasthan and brought to Ahmedabad on Saturday. “He had brought mother and daughter to Surat with a promise to provide them shelter. First, he killed the mother, who went missing on March 20. The daughter was witness to the murder, so the accused must have decided to kill the child too,” J K Bhatt, Joint CP, Ahmedabad Crime Branch, said.

On April 6, Surat police found the body of a nine-year-old girl with 86 injuries dumped in the bushes in Pandesara area of Surat. The autopsy revealed that the girl was raped and tortured for days before being killed.

The incident led to a public outcry, with leading industrialist Anand Mahindra venting out his ire on social media saying that he was willing to volunteer as an executioner for “brutal rapists and murderers of young girls”.

Giving details about the accused, Bhatt said that though Gurjar did not have any recorded criminal background, he was considered to be a strongman in his village. “He had taken the girl to his hometown but because he had a fight with his family who sought details of the girl, he must have decided to do away with her.

“When his family asked him, he said that the girl had gone off to her village with her mother,” Bhatt said.

On whether the police had information that the mother-daughter were brought to Surat as bonded construction workers and were bought for Rs 35,000, Bhatt said that so far they have not been able to verify this.

On being asked whether more persons were involved in the incident, Bhatt said, “We have got information of who his associates are but would not like to reveal more details in the interest of the investigations in the case...Surat Police would now carry forward the investigations and establish all the links,” Bhatt said.
