Tejashwi meets Bihar Governor, stakes claim to form Govt

Leader of the Opposition in the Bihar State Assembly Tejashwi Yadav on Friday met Bihar Governor Satya Pal Malik and staked claim to form the government in the state.

The move comes amidst the backdrop of Karnataka governor inviting the single largest party — the BJP— to form the government in the southern state.

In Bihar, the RJD is the single largest party.

The list submitted by Tejashwi, former deputy chief minister of Bihar, to the governor contained the names of 80 RJD MLAs, 27 Congress, three CPI-ML and one from HAM (of Jitan Ram Manjhi).

“We have submitted the list of 111 MLAs supporting us. Many other JD (U) MLAs are also in touch with us. The governor should dismiss the present regime and invite us to form the government as we are not only the single largest party in the Assembly but the single largest pre-poll alliance partners too. We will prove our majority on the floor of the House,” he said after coming out of the Raj Bhawan.

The strength of the Bihar Assembly is 243 and the halfway mark is 122.

On July 26, 2017, when Nitish Kumar dumped the grand alliance and submitted his resignation, the then Governor Keshri Nath Tripathi had invited him to be sworn in on July 27 even though the Janata Dal (United) had only 71 MLAs.

Tejashwi had then staged a dharna at the entrance of the Raj Bhawan pleading that being the single largest party, the RJD should have been first asked to take the floor test.

But his pleas failed to cut ice with the governor.

Nitish eventually proved his majority with the help of 53 MLAs from the BJP.

“As custodian of the Constitution as well as someone with such vast experience in public life, we earnestly request you to uphold the spirit of the Constitution and allow us to show our strength on the floor of the House following the Bommai judgement and the recent decision of the Karnataka Governor which has become the guiding principle of such cases,” Tejashwi wrote in a letter to the Bihar governor.
