Telangana: College student set on fire by classmate

A final year undergrad student was set on fire by her classmate in Hanmakonda town of Telangana in broad daylight on Wednesday. The boy first sprinkled petrol on her and lit her allegedly for turning down his proposal.

The girl is battling for life with 80 per cent burn injuries. Locals thrashed the accused before the police detained him. Onlookers that tried to save the girl who was pleading for help were threatened by the attacker.

According to Hanmakonda police, 20-year old girl Ravali was on her way to the college when Sai Anvesh came on a bike and waylaid her. He took out a cool drink bottle from his bike and threw the petrol at her and set her on fire.

The girl was rushed to MGM Hospital, where doctors declared her condition critical. Anvesh is said to be known to the girl for some time. They both study in Vagdevi College.

Assistant police commissioner Chandraiah said Anvesh had come prepared to harm the girl. He brought petrol in a cool drink bottle and carried a matchbox in his pocket.

The girl hails from Ramachandrapuram in Sangem block of Warangal district.
